For the fourth straight year, Northlands College in La Ronge put on its Northern Visionaries Video Essay Contest Gala this past weekend.

La Ronge’s Leah Nagy earned first place. Her video focused on starting a youth centre in La Ronge. Her prize for coming out on top includes a $2500 scholarship and a trip to New Orleans. Nagy says she spent a lot of time working on her video.

“It took forever, and then the first program didn’t work, so we had to redo it,” said Nagy. “After the top ten, we did editing again. After the top five, we did editing again, so I couldn’t even tell you how long, long time though.”

The 60 students who entered could create a video about a number of topics, including Indigenization of their chosen field, education, leadership and innovation.

Brandi Bell from Northlands College admits, there were a lot of quality entries this time around.

“To try and get it down to five videos to go to the provincial judging panel was near impossible,” said Bell.

Shannon Bear of Deschambault Lake finished in second, La Ronge’s Tina Shaw came in third, Creighton’s Christie Bartle finished fourth and La Ronge’s Ashley Carlson came in fifth.
