Two new Oxford homes were opened in Regina today to provide transitional housing for 10 individuals recovering from addiction and moving toward full independence.

The federal and provincial governments are contributing about $470,000 for the homes. One of them will be named “June Place” in honour of former Social Services Minister, June Draude.

The recovery homes operate under a strict set of rules and provide a safe, caring environment. Public Safety Minister, Ralph Goodale and Social Services Minister, Tina Beaudry-Mellor took part in the official opening ceremonies this afternoon.

“We strive to make our communities stronger by assisting those who want to break the cycle of dependence, vulnerability and homelessness,” said Oxford House spokesman, Blair Pope.

The homes are resale homes in Regina that are purchased, then renovated to meet the needs of five adults. Oxford homes has a high success rate in helping recovering addicts stay clean once they get out of treatment and before they are capable of living on their own.

Each tenant signs an agreement to abide by the rules set out by Oxford as part of the long-term recovery plan.
