Early 2018 trial dates have been set for a former Fond-du-Lac Chief accused of fraud.
Napoleon Mercredi is also charged with theft and breach of trust by a public officer, after what the RCMP calls an extensive investigation into his financial dealings from when he was chief between 2009 and 2011.
The RCMP has not stated the dollar value of the alleged theft, and say the allegations against him were brought forward by his successors.
In a past interview, Mercredi said he felt singled out by the original allegations, which he considers to be politically motivated.
“I don’t have any stresses over these charges or anything like that… to me, stealing is taking money without people’s permission and everything that I got is all requested” mostly for band members who need help, he said.
Pretrial dates are already underway, with the next scheduled for June 30. The details of what takes place at that time are protected by a publication ban.
If no resolution is reached between counsel during upcoming court dates, Mercredi will go to trial, scheduled for eight days in February.
The court proceeding are all taking place at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.
