Miriam Körner’s novel, Yellow Dog, has been shortlisted for The Silver Branch Fiction Award.
The story follows a 13-year-old boy who is introduced to the world of dogsledding in a north Saskatchewan Community.
Miriam, who is originally from Germany, now resides in a cabin near La Ronge with her sled dogs.
“Whenever I met somebody who had dogs, I started asking questions. The book kind of connects my own experience with running dogs today, with what I learned from people in the past,” said Körner.
“That’s what the book was written for — for kids that are in the north that don’t find themselves in books necessarily. I didn’t think it would have an impact on the wider literary scene in Canada, so when the first awards started coming in I was positively surprised.”
The winner of the award will be announced at the Festival of Trees in Toronto.
