Metis Fishing Rights Ruling Expected In July

A judge will make his decision in a Metis fishing rights case on July 15th.

Final arguments in the trial of Ron Laviolette were presented in a Meadow Lake court room yesterday.

His legal counsel, Clem Chartier, says one of the most important issues the judge will rule on is the matter of whether Green Lake can be considered a historic Metis community.

However, Chartier says the judge will also have to determine whether Metis can exercise fishing and hunting rights in an area they have ties to, but don’t necessarily live in.

Almost 30 Metis supporters were on hand to watch yesterday’s proceedings.
