A tough financial road appears to lie ahead for the Cumberland House Cree Nation.

Chief Walter Sewap says since he became leader a few weeks ago, he has learned the band will have to work hard to balance its budget.

Sewap won’t say what economic projects the band is currently working on — only that some of them involve the government and other Swampy Cree First Nations.

He does say one bright spot for his band involves the future construction of a new health centre in Cumberland House.

Sewap says his band will also press the Saskatchewan government to smooth out the road leading to the community.

He notes the upcoming tasks will be tough, but he has confidence in himself and his council.
