It appears there will be a byelection in Sandy Bay next week related to the recent Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation election.

The band has not released anything official at this stage, but sources tell MBC that the decision to hold a bylection was made following a meeting of the elders that heard appeals into the recent PBCN election.

Two candidates for one of the band council positions in the community finished with exactly the same number of votes.

The byelection between David Cariboo and Robert Ray is expected to take place on May 19th.

Three other appeals that were launched regarding the recent election were dismissed, but the band is not saying why.

Chief candidate Lester Gardiner filed one of those appeals, and isn’t happy it was dismissed without any explanation and without him present at the proceedings.

Gardiner says he’s now discussing his options with Indian Affairs.

Gardiner finished fourth in the voting for chief in the recent PBCN election — over 1,000 votes behind Chief Ron Michel.
