A 55-year-old woman from Wollaston Lake is into Day 5 of a planned 60-day walk to raise money for a new church in her community.

Genevieve Besskkaystare left Sucker River, 30 km north of La Ronge, on June 6th.

She will carry on to Prince Albert, Regina, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Edmonton and finally back to Prince Albert in a span of two months.

She says she chose to walk because fundraising in her community is difficult, and she figured the people of Saskatchewan might help her.

Besskaystare says the church in her community is getting old and is too small for the number of people who attend church each Sunday.

She says attending church should be a family experience, and doesn’t like the fact that family members have to attend different services in order to accommodate everyone in the community.

Besskaystare will be joined by her sister, a 6-year-old nephew and others at various stages of the trip.
