Northerners Honoured For Heroism

Some Cumberland House residents have been honoured for their efforts in saving the lives of two men last winter.

Rene Carriere, Les Carriere and Solomon Carriere were unable to attend the RCMP ceremony in Melfort last week because they were taking part in the Saskatchewan Centennial Canoe Quest. However, other people associated with the rescue operation were there.

It was just a few months ago that a conservation officer and an RCMP officer fell through the ice while snowmobiling across Cumberland Lake.

The men called for help by satellite phone and emergency crews were summoned.

Prince Albert firefighter Joe Zatylny says they never would have been able to reach the men if it weren’t for the Carrieres’ help.

He adds the experience could have been a tragic one, but turned out positive due to the teamwork of everyone involved.

Tammy Ross of the RCMP was also honoured at last week’s ceremony.

She performed CPR on a Lac La Ronge Indian Band member who had been stabbed on the Kitsaki reserve.
