The province has announced the re-appointment of 11 northerners to the Mamawetan Churchill River Regional Health Authority board.

Longtime Metis Nation of Saskatchewan area director Al Rivard is the new board chair.

He succeeds La Ronge resident Louise Wiens, who stays on as a board member.

Rivard says he’s excited about the challenge and looks forward to dealing with northern medical issues over the next three years.

He notes geography is one of the biggest hurdles facing northern communities, because distance makes the sharing of resources more difficult to manage.

Rivard says he and the other members of the board will be examining new ways the various regions of the North can maximize their health services.

He says partnerships are needed to leap past cross-jurisdictional issues and treat medical problems.
