A uranium mining company with several holdings in northern Saskatchewan has recently reached an employment milestone.

As of July 31st, Cameco Corporation had over 1,000 northerners in its workforce — the first time in the company’s history that northern employment levels have been that high.

Of the 1005 northerners in the company’s employ at the end of last month, 925 identified themselves as Aboriginal.

Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn says the start of construction of the Cigar Lake project is the biggest reason why the company reached this milestone last month.

Cameco is also reporting that 64 per cent of the new hires so far this year are residents of northern Saskatchewan.
