Some local residents in La Loche are looking to reclaim treaty status for themselves and their families.

This week, a meeting took place in the community which saw former Aboriginal leader Jim Sinclair talk with Metis and non-status citizens about a new approach to the issue.

Sinclair’s strategy is to have these people applying to the government as a community rather than as individuals.

Local community leader Leonard Montgrand is helping facilitate the process, and hopes it eventually corrects many past injustices.

Montgrand says they are currently collecting a list of names of people who want their status returned to them.

Once that is complete, he says they plan to convert it into a legal document and send it to Ottawa.
