Members of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation will go to the polls at the end of this month to elect a new chief.
Former leader Ron Michel verbally resigned his post at a council meeting last week — a week after being elected the new chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council.
PBCN electoral officer Ted Merasty says anyone who has resided on a reserve for the past six months and is at least 18 years of age is eligible to run in this month’s campaign.
Merasty says nominations will take place on November 15th, with the election itself on November 29th.
He notes some people have already made comments about whether or not councillors should be able to compete in the election.
He says every councillor is allowed to run because there are no clear rules about that issue in the band’s election code.
Merasty adds rumours are already beginning to fly about how the election is to be carried out.
He says phone numbers are on the election posters going out to each reserve and anyone with questions should contact him.
He also states he has no problem talking to anyone about the vote.
