La Ronge is now one of only four communities in the province that has a support program for people called to testify in court in violent crime cases.

Justice Minister Frank Quennell made the announcement earlier this week in La Ronge.

Quennell says the Victim/Witness Services program helps both victims and witnesses of crime cope with the violent incident and the criminal justice process.

He says the government chose La Ronge because communities in northern Saskatchewan have some of the highest rates of violent crime, and because the North wasn’t covered previously.

Quennell says this initiative build on the Victim Services program already established in La Ronge years ago.

Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert are the other three Saskatchewan communities that currently have a Victim/Witness Services program.
