The chief electoral officer for the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s upcoming byelection for chief says nine candidates have thrown their hat into the ring.

Ted J. Merasty says six candidates are from Pelican Narrows. They include Lester Gardiner, Eileen Linklater, Harold Linklater, John Merasty, Stan J. Merasty and Tommy Sewap.

Others running for chief later this month are Cornelius Ballantyne of Deschambault Lake and Ernest Cook and Hector Morin of Southend.

Band members go to the polls on November 29th to choose a successor to former chief Ron Michel, who recently resigned after winning the chief election at the Prince Albert Grand Council.

The Peter Ballantyne band is the second-largest First Nation in the province.
