LLRIB Chief Feels Treaty Rights Are Safe

Fears that Ottawa is prepared to shrug off treaty responsibilities to First Nations aren’t shared by the chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

Last week, several chiefs from Alberta joined their counterparts in Quebec in voicing concerns with how Assembly of First Nations national chief Phil Fontaine was dealing with the government.

Some say too much emphasis has been placed on getting funds out of Ottawa, rather than making the government live up to its treaty responsibilities.

However, LLRIB Chief Tammy Cook-Searson says she’s confident things will work out and treaty rights will be respected if everyone works together.

Cook-Searson’s band is the largest in the province.
