Push For New Band In Green Lake Dismissed By MNS

The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is opposing a grassroots movement to try to reinstate a First Nation some argue was once based in Green Lake.

The proponents of what’s being called the Kenomotay band will hold a public meeting on Saturday to answer any questions.

They are convinced the band lost its status with the federal government about a century ago when band members were convinced to file for Metis scrip.

Green Lake has been typically regarded as a Metis community, and MNS president Dwayne Roth says Metis historians haven’t found any evidence to back the new claims.

Whatever comes of this, Roth says the Metis need to be consulted at every stage of the process.

Roth says a similar case is taking place in Manitoba, and it’s been established there that the case for a reserve can’t move ahead without the involvement of the Metis.
