Three candidates have put their names forward for next month’s tribal chief byelection for the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.
Chief Helen Ben of Makwa Sahgaiehcan, Harvey Chief of Island Lake and Leonard Iron of Canoe Lake are all in the running.
The three are hoping to replace outgoing MLTC tribal chief Richard Glaudue, who’s resigning as of December 31st.
Gladue has been in power for 11 years, but will soon be taking on a position with the provincial government department of First Nations and Metis Relations.
The byelection will take place on January 6th in Meadow Lake, and will involve five voting delegates from all nine MLTC bands.
The winner will serve in office until next November, when the regularly-scheduled tribal chief election is held. Whoever wins that vote will be given a four-year term in office.
