MNS Confident Metis Will Impact Election Results

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan is encouraging its members to vote in the upcoming federal election — saying their vote can make a significant difference.

MNS President Dwayne Roth says the results of the last federal election show the Métis vote exceeded the margin of victory in 5 of the 13 ridings in the Saskatchewan.

Roth says Métis National Council President Clem Chartier has sent a letter to the four main federal parties, wanting to know their Aboriginal campaign platforms and their response to issues relating to Métis rights.

The MNC also wants to find out whether they will honour commitments made at the historic First Ministers Meeting on Aboriginal Issues in Kelowna, BC.

Roth says if the MNS is satisfied with one specific party, the organization will encourage their members to support that party — and may even actively campaign for that party — in the January 23rd federal election.

He says in the Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River riding alone, over 9,500 Métis voted. Northern MP Jeremy Harrison won the election by 1,464 votes over the second-place candidate.
