MLTC Chief Candidate Pledges Sweeping Changes

A candidate running in the Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s tribal chief by-election next month says it’s time for change.

Canoe Lake Cree Nation executive director Leonard Iron says it’s his priority to change the way the organization runs its affairs.

Despite the fact he’s running, Iron says he believes the MLTC should not select a tribal chief through an election process. He says that’s because it’s essentially a management position, so he argues it should be applied for and decided upon through a selection process.

Iron says if he is elected, he will change the way the MLTC connects with the grassroots people.

Iron also promises to change the name of the MLTC, because he feels “Meadow Lake” and “Tribal Council” are old Indian Affairs district designations and he believes the organization should reflect who it represents.

The MLTC tribal chief by-election will take place on January 6th.
