NDP Candidate Pledges To Push Boarding School File

The NDP candidate in northern Saskatchewan in the upcoming election says the government needs to offer compensation for former students at an Ile-a-la-Crosse Metis boarding school.

It was recently learned those students don’t qualify for the compensation outlined in the government’s recently-announced $1.9-billion residential schools deal. Some students have launched a class-action lawsuit over the affair.

Anita Jackson says if she is voted in as the constituency’s next Member of Parliament, she will bring the issue of compensation forward and press the government to provide the same deal that was made to survivors of residential schools.

Jackson also says the government compensation package isn’t enough to fully compensate for what happened to the students in residential schools, but it is a start.
