Northern Lakes Plagued By Thin Ice

Higher than normal water flows in rivers and lakes in the North have prompted the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority to issue a warning for people to use extra caution when on the ice.

Watershed authority spokesman Don Dill says the higher water volumes has resulted in more open water areas and thinner ice than normal.

As a result, many areas that are usually safe to cross may not be safe this winter.

Dill says snowmobilers should use extra caution when on Lac La Ronge, Lac La Plonge, Cowan Lake, Makwa Lake, Anglin Lake, Emma Lake and Christopher Lake.

He notes particular care should be taken downstream from water control structures on those lakes.

Dill says anyone planning on going onto the ice should use caution and common sense when deciding if the ice is thick enough to travel on.
