The Meadow Lake Tribal Council made history today as the first woman tribal chief in the province was elected by a large margin of votes.

Helen Ben walked away with 40 of a possible 43 votes in today’s by-election, beating out challengers Harvey Chief and Leonard Iron.

Ben, who currently sits as the chief of the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, says it’s an honour and privilege to hold the position of tribal chief.

She says she plans on using this opportunity to adopt more adequate programming in the MLTC communities, especially for children.

Ben will only be in office until November, when the MLTC’s regularly-scheduled chief election takes place.
