Family Court Now Up And Running On First Nation

A new court system has officially started up on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation.

Judge Gerald Morin presided over the first sitting of family court yesterday.

The court will be held every two weeks on the reserve and hear cases involving domestic issues.

RCMP officer George Wooten has been stationed on the reserve for the past two years. He says the court is a good idea.

Workers with the band say the court will reduce travel costs for families while promoting a sense of healing not found in city courts.

A Saskatoon-based lawyer is applauding the decision to set up the court.

Helen Cotton says having the court on reserve could help reduce stress. She believes the court is an important step forward for the community
