Northern Research Institute To Be Revived

A move is underway to resurrect what has been called the Mid Canada Research Institute.

The institute was a collaboration of academics and northern Saskatchewan political movers and shakers from 1999 to 2001.

Back then, it’s primary goal was to build a case for former northern Saskatchewan MP Rick Laliberte’s vision of a federal policy for the northern half of Canadian provinces.

However, it’s being re-established to provide groups in northern Saskatchewan with the research they need to undertake development projects.

Ile-a-la-Crosse mayor Max Morin has agreed to become chair of the institute, and hopes northern communities will take advantage of what the institute will have to offer.

Morin says they hope to line up funding for the institute in the near future.

University of Alberta professor Dr. David Malcolm has agreed to provide the institute with his expertise.
