Work is proceeding towards the establishment of a drug treatment centre for youth in La Ronge.

Mamawetan-Churchill River regional health authority spokesman John Kreiser says staff have already been hired to man the day program, which will operate out of the Kihkinak Friendship centre.

The idea was first announced last summer in the provincial government’s Project Hope initiative.

Kreiser says the centre will be very specific in its approach to weening kids off alcohol and drugs. He says group work, life skills, and cultural teachings will all be offered at the centre.

He says kids who need help will be able to enter into treatment in the morning, and then finish up around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. But Kreiser says they won’t be set up to accept any patients overnight.

Kreiser says program development begins in April. However, it will be later this year before they are ready to accept any clients.
