Speaker and performer, Robb Nash, travelled to Black Lake on Friday to reach out to youth on the topics of combatting depression and suicide prevention.
Students and members of the community gathered in the gymnasium of the Father Porte Memorial School to hear Nash perform with his band.
Nash says he hopes everyone takes away a positive message from his performance.
“What’s great is so many people take away different things from it. We go to a school, we tell stories (and) we play songs, some stories are about drinking and driving or addiction and you know, there are different people that are inspired by different moments,” said Nash.
“The whole real idea that we are trying to get across is the fact that, we’re all going to have tough days in our life, what do you do when it happens? And why wait for it to happen?”
Nash has taken the stage at schools and events across the country and had a performance earlier this week in Prince Albert. He says that youth in schools that are rich, poor and everywhere in between are facing serious problems.
“Sometimes we’ll go to some of the wealthiest schools in Canada and the issues are even worse,” said Nash. “Whether there are issues of drug use or cutting, or whatever, when you’ve money in your pocket it’s only easier to get it.”
Nash noted that remote and northern communities often struggle to find resources to help youth fight through their issues.
“In some of these small communities, northern ones, you don’t get the resources that you would in a big city,” said Nash. “That’s why with this tour, we vowed not to just go to the major cities.”
The team that Nash is a part of is solely funded through donations and was flown to Black Lake courtesy of Transwest Air.
The group does not charge a fee for the group to come to schools and perform.
