At the La Ronge Ice Wolves Golf Tournament on Saturday, Bryce Fiske was presented with a cheque for $13,850.71.
Fiske was one of the survivors of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Fiske is from La Ronge and spent his whole junior hockey career with the La Ronge Ice Wolves before he was traded to Humboldt in October this past season.
Following the Humboldt tragedy, a group of local women started a campaign to sell ribbons to raise money for Bryce. A trust fund was also set up.
“I couldn’t believe how much people were donating,” said Jenny Nicol, one of the people involved with the local fundraising efforts.
“When the bus accident happened, it kind of hit home because I was a billet mom for two of the Ice Wolves. We started like two days after the bus accident. We were just going to give the ribbons away, but we kind of decided that we should just start fundraising for Bryce, since he is the local boy from La Ronge.”
Last week, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks announced they had signed Bryce Fiske. UOIT is based out of Oshawa.
“I’m excited, obviously, it’s been my goal (playing university hockey) since day one of training camp when I was 17 and like I said – I’m excited,” said Fiske in a Ridgebacks’ media release. “It was my goal and I’m excited to see where the future takes me.”
During his SJHL career, Fiske, a defenceman, had 84 points in 218 regular season games. In 16 playoff games, he recorded 13 points.
