Two hundred people are expected to converge on Beauval this week for the second annual Treaty 10 Gathering.
The participants are to examine protection and enforcement of their treaty.
“We need to protect our treaties, right now for the treaty right for education and for health. If we look at the economic resources, we have no economic resources, we have no economic resources that we can afford to pay for our young people’s education,” said Louis Wolverine, the vice-president of the Treaty 10 Gathering Organizing Committee.
“It is very crucial, I thought now that because of our economic condition that we live in, we cannot afford to pay for our children to go to school. We have very limited opportunities for economics and employment.”
Wolverine says some young people are going to post-secondary school to get an education, but that careers in their professions in their home community is limited, affecting the growth of that community, something he wants changed.
Panel presentations will be made throughout the week on lands and resources, including water, education and health.
The gathering will occur through August 2.
