The First Nations University of Canada will be under some close scrutiny this fall.
The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada has announced it plans to launch a review of the school.
In a news release on its website, the association states it wants to review the situation at the FNUC so it can address concerns about the institution’s membership in the association.
The issue first came up after several teachers and staff at the school were fired or suspended by the FSIN’s Morley Watson last summer.
That led to allegations the FNUC was suffering from heavy political influence, and that academic freedom wasn’t being respected.
The AUCC then told the school its standing as a nationally-recognized institution could be in jeopardy if the university didn’t make reforms.
The FSIN recently announced it was scaling back the school’s board of directors, and also claimed other work had been done to address governance issues.
The AUCC says it will send a committee to the school this fall to talk to students, teachers and administrators.
