The RCMP has decided to attempt a dive to reach a plane which went down in Peter Pond Lake in 1959.
The wreckage was discovered on July 31 using sonar but the Mounties originally said a dive in the deep water would be too risky.
Corporal Rob King says the RCMP would now like to attempt some kind of recovery and is planning the necessary steps to make a dive possible later this month.
“Our first step is to get to the area and assess where the dive will take place,” he says. “When we are doing that we are looking at what is available for boat launches and shore support.”
King says the RCMP will also try to put an R-O-V in the water so an underwater camera can determine things like the exact location of the wreckage, visibility and vegetation in the area and the nature of the lake bottom.
Additional RCMP equipment and divers may be brought in from Manitoba or Alberta.
All of the equipment will need to be trucked to the northern location and a base of operations set up.
King says organizing this type of operation is a slow process and the Mounties are hoping a dive can be done by Aug. 27.
