For the first time since 2015, the La Ronge Ice Wolves defeated the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night.
After losing 5-1 in Melfort on Friday evening, the Ice Wolves responded with a 4-2 victory on Saturday at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Offensively, the Ice Wolves were led by Shane Hounsell, who scored twice.
“Shane’s played real well,” said Ice Wolves Head Coach and GM Evan Vossen. “Obviously, adding a little bit offensively for us tonight and the past few games as well too.”
Mitch Zambon and Ben Manson had the other La Ronge goals Saturday.
“Everybody bought in, everybody was going their hardest,” said Ice Wolves defenceman Ben Manson. “We had all four lines going, all of the defence were going and everybody just played their best.”
The Ice Wolves led 1-0 after 20 minutes, but they erupted for two quick goals early in the second, which ended the night of Melfort goalie Jack Walters, who was replaced by Hunter Arps. Zach Anderson and Justin Ball scored for the Mustangs.
Meantime, Chad Duran made 34 saves for the win in the La Ronge net. Duran improved his record to 2-3 with the victory.
With the win, the Ice Wolves improved to 2-6 on the season. La Ronge has now won two of its past three games. Saturday’s win ended a 15-game losing streak in the regular season against Melfort.
The Ice Wolves will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday in Estevan when they take on the Bruins for the first time this season. Wednesdays’ game is the start of seven straight contests away from the Mel Hegland Uniplex.
You can catch Wednesday’s contest on MBC Network Radio, the pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m. with Braden Malsbury.
