Back To Batoche Organizers Ready For Crowds

The chairman of the Back to Batoche committee says he’s optimistic this year’s event will be just as successful as those staged in previous years.

The annual showcase of Metis culture and tradition kicks off at 5:00 this afternoon with opening ceremonies, and Guy Bouvier says everything looks ready to go.

Bouvier says a lot of work has gone into the event as organizers had just five weeks to get everything ready.

The interim Metis Nation of Saskatchewan president says it’s been a tough year for the Metis due to fallout over the 2004 election scandal, but he’s hopeful a new vote will help solve differences.

Still, he acknowledges all Metis may not agree on how the new election is to be carried out.

One thing he is hoping for is that Metis politicians leave their campaign speeches at home when they arrive this weekend.

Bouvier says one new wrinkle to this year’s showcase is that the Batoche National Historic site is co-hosting the event.

It wraps up on Sunday.
