The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is standing in full support of a retail cannabis dispensary on a Saskatchewan First Nation.

The Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation was slated to open a retail cannabis outlet on-reserve Wednesday morning.

Saskatchewan Justice Minister Don Morgan says the outlet is illegal since Muscowpetung is not one of the provincially recognized communities eligible to apply for a retail cannabis permit.

However, in a released statement, the FSIN says the province has no jurisdiction in the matter and the First Nation is fully within its treaty rights to open an on-reserve cannabis dispensary if it so chooses.

The Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation is located about 70 kilometres northeast of Regina.
