Education and Enviromental awards go to Lac La Ronge Indian Band Women at ‘Strength of Our Women’ Gala
Two women are honourees from Friday night’s ‘Strength of Our Women Awards’.
The event honours First Nation women in Saskachewan who show strength and resiliency.
“It is a privilege to honour our Indigenous women for their extraordinary contributions in their fields” said FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear in an FSIN media release. “With so many accomplished nominees it posed a challenge to narrow the field, but ultimately the women who we honoured tonight are deserving of this recognition. We are so proud of them all.”
Eleanor Hegland of Lac La Ronge is the recipient of the environmental award, which is awarded to those who promote First Nations beliefs and ideals about defending Mother Earth.
Nancy Lafleur, a teacher at Sturgeon Lake Central School is the recipient of the Education award for promoting First Nations culture, language and values in schools.
“Times are changing in many of our First Nations communities,” says Nancy Lafleur. “A gala that highlights the strength of our women definitely plays tribute to the fact that times are changing. We realize there is a lot of strength in our communities and it is because of the women.”
The event was held at TCU Place in Saskatoon on Friday, November 16th.
