Province Defends Let It Burn Policy

Saskatchewan’s Minister of Public Safety is defending the government’s so-called “Let It Burn” policy.

This week, Opposition MLA Glen Hart blasted the government over the policy, which he says allows flames to come too close to communities before they are doused.

However, Minister Kevin Yates says 2006 was an unusual year for fire fighting in Saskatchewan.

Yates says community members in the far north have every right to be concerned, however, the policy prevented any loss of life or loss of major infrastructure and he feels comfortable with that.

Yates says the policy-review will take place in the fall and feedback will likely be taken from northerners.
