The officer who shot and killed 22-year-old Brydon Whitstone a little over a year ago will testify at a corner’s inquest into his death on Wednesday.

The inquest is hearing from the various RCMP officers Wednesday morning who were on the scene on Oct. 21 after the Buick LeSabre the Indigenous man was driving came to rest at an intersection in North Battleford following multiple collisions with police vehicles.

This was after a short high speed pursuit through the streets of the city.

Officers have maintained throughout the inquest Whitstone posed a clear and imminent danger to themselves and the public and Constable Jerry Abbott had no other choice but to discharge his weapon firing two bullets into the Cree man’s chest.

As it turned out, RCMP officers had mistakenly identified the white Buick LeSabre Whitstone was operating as one involved in an earlier drive-by shooting incident.

An investigation of the LeSabre following the shooting found no firearms in the vehicle.
