Northern residents are petitioning the provincial government to make immediate repairs to Highway 102 north of La Ronge.

The petition presented Tuesday by Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette seeks to repave from La Ronge to Sucker River.

“Highway 102 north of La Ronge is the only access for thousands of residents in northern Saskatchewan. There is a large volume of traffic on this highway that is involved with transporting goods and services including school buses, ambulance, medical vans, and police. This highway currently has huge potholes and ruts that pose a real danger to anyone who dares to travel on them,” Vermette said.

“That the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan call upon the Sask. Party government to make the investments and repairs that are needed to ensure public safety on Highway 102 between La Ronge and Sucker River, and to repave the portion of Highway 102 between La Ronge and Sucker River.”

The March 20 budget earmarks money for building, operating and maintaining northern roads and airports, but a Highways Ministry spokesperson says those improvements include  Highway 135 south of Pelican Narrows, Highway 155 north of Green Lake and spot improvements on Highway 106 east of the junction of Highway 135.
