The provincial government has announced a $24-million highway upgrade near the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
The project will see upgrades to the 71-kilometre stretch of Highway 219 between Saskatoon and Highway 15.
The province says the multi-year initiative will support the growing tourism and commercial industries at Whitecap and in the Lake Diefenbaker area — which are valued at over $100 million.
Highways Minister Eldon Lautermilch notes a significant portion of the work will take place on-reserve, but says the province wasn’t going to let a jurisdictional argument prevent it from helping out.
Whitecap is already the site of a world-class golf course, and will soon be home to a major casino and resort development.
