The First Nations University of Canada is left to repair the canvas of two teepees vandalized late Friday night or early Saturday.
The front lawn has a display of 14 teepees with lighting arrangements. The structures have been standing for approximately one year with no incident.
“We don’t know any intention around it, whether it was random vandalism or racial motivated,” explained Peter Brass, the arts collection manager for the university.
Brass says the teepees were slashed with a metal rod, creating long tears. He says he will be able to sew the damage.
One teepee with poles had to be removed, while only the canvas on the second teepee was taken down.
Brass says the incident took place out of the range of security cameras. He says the lighting around the teepees was not damaged, puzzling him as to the motivation.
