The La Ronge Chamber of Commerce will be holding its second annual Tri-Community Awards and Recognition Gala Saturday at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.
After a lengthy hiatus, this is the second year the awards will be taking place.
The gala consists of dinner, live music, the awards and delegate speeches.
A variety of local businesses, non-profits, home-based companies and citizens make up the nomination list.
The list of awards at this year’s event includes citizen of the year, top home-based business, young entrepreneur award and non-profit of the year.
“Also, nine long term recognition awards for some of the businesses that have been around for quite a while,” La Ronge Chamber of Commerce President Crystal Everest says.
This award is for organizations that have been in existence from 25 to 41 years.
This year there is also a new category sponsored by Northlands College.
“The post-secondary advocacy award highlights someone who has pushed other individuals, whether it be students or organizations to develop more in the education field,” Everest says.
For last year’s inaugural gala, chamber of commerce executives selected award winners.
“We tried to do the decisions ourselves based on how many nominations per business or individual got,” Everest explains. “So, it looked a little skewed to some extent because last year we only had 44 nominations.”
This year the plan is to keep selections as unbiased as possible with a group of volunteers making up the nomination committee.
The committee members had to sift through over 90 nominations.
