Residents in Birch Hills have voted against the proposed construction of a youth addictions facility in their community.

Late last month, the Prince Albert Grand Council announced it had decided on Birch Hills as the setting for a new youth detox centre.

Town mayor Gordon Dyck publicly backed the move, but said a non-binding vote on the issue would still be held the night of the civic election.

Dyck was acclaimed as mayor last night, but the proposal for the centre was rejected by the majority of voters.

The proposal read: “Are you in favour of the sale of any land to the Prince Albert Grand Council for the construction of a youth addictions facility in the town of Birch Hills.”

A clerk at the town office says 55 per cent voted “no” to the idea, while 45 per cent approved.

She stresses the results are non-binding, but will be discussed at an upcoming council meeting.
