Several members of the La Ronge Churchill Chargers football team have been recognized on the provincial stage.
Grade 12 students Eric Choquette, Justin McKerracher, Solomon Groves, Luke Hepworth, Hayden Penney and Tim Zelensky will play for the northern nine-aside team at the Senior Bowl in Regina this weekend.
“We knew we had a good chance of sending a good representation to the Senior Bowl – representing the nine-man north team,” said Churchill Chargers Head Coach Gabe Andrews.
“It involves these athletes going to a couple of identification camps, tryout camps and putting some time away to continue their commitment to football in the spring now. Gives them an opportunity to play the game maybe one last time, so we are all really excited to be part of it.”
Andrews will lead Team North as the head coach, while Nate Shaw will also help the northern squad as the defensive coordinator.
“When I was asked to be the head coach for the team, I was kind of taken aback and excited,” said Andrews. “I was allowed to make up my coaching staff and one of those being Nate Shaw, who has put a lot of time and energy into our program in La Ronge here. Unfortunately, he’s moving on to another community and this will be an opportunity for him and I to coach together one last time.”
The game takes place on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
