La Ronge played host to the Northern Saskatchewan Flag Football tournament this past weekend.

Athletes from around northern Saskatchewan took part in the festivities.

“It was an excellent event,” said Mark Williment, who is with the Northern Saskatchewan Football League. “We had 12 teams participating, five teams in the Grade 7 and 8 category and seven teams from Grades 5 and 6 play either a round-robin or a double round-robin event.”

In the Grade 5/6 category, it was the Pre-Cam Community School #1 team coming out on top. Churchill Community High School was victorious in the Grade 7/8 division.

“I think we have a lot of kids hooked on football and that’s what we intend by running this event, whether it be flag (football) or introducing tackle down the road,” said Williment. “The kids had a great time and we are very grateful for the work the volunteers did to pull this off.”

Williment also says they plan to host this event again next year.
