Impasse Over Spill Clean-Up At Wollaston Lake Over

It appears a dispute over who should pay for the clean-up of a diesel fuel spill at Wollaston Lake this past June has been resolved.
The work to clean the contaminated water and shoreline at Welcome Bay was about 60 per cent complete when an impasse between the Hatchet Lake band and the provincial government over jurisdiction brought the clean-up effort to a halt.
Now, Indian Affairs says it will pay for the cost to make sure the work gets done at the earliest opportunity — which will probably be spring, now that the weather has turned cold.
Spokesman Trevor Sutter says the department is setting aside $500,000 for the clean-up.
Sutter also says while the department is setting aside jurisdictional arguments for now, it will probably re-visit the issue at a later date.
