Parents In Wollaston Set To Tackle Youth Problem

A major meeting to discuss parental issues within the Hatchet Lake First Nation is taking place tonight in the community.
Coordinator Rosalie Tsannie-Burseth says educators, addictions counsellors, health workers, an economic director and even a priest will be there for the benefit of the community’s parents.
She says the purpose of the event is to help parents deal with their kids and ensure they’re in at night.
Tsannie-Burseth notes the band has been working at addressing a number of problems associated with youth, and they need to lay some ground work.
She adds the purpose of the meeting isn’t to lay blame, but to give everyone a better sense of where the community needs to grow.
She says they plan to seperate parents into groups of 10, so that they will have teams to work with and fellow residents they can be accountable to.
A similar conference involving external agencies could take place come January.
The meeting begins at 7:30 tonight at the local high school and is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
