La Ronge Leaders Ponder Regional Water System

Local leaders in La Ronge have until next month to decide on whether to approve the construction of a regional water distribution system.

Under the proposal, the town, the village of Air Ronge and the adjacent Lac La Ronge Indian Band reserves would share a system that provides treated water to all three jurisdictions.

Western Economic Diversification is apparently willing to pay a large portion of the 7.1-million price tag.

Indian Affairs would pay for the band’s share of the cost.

According to Indian Affairs spokesperson Noreen Kotowich, both departments want an answer by December 1st.

La Ronge mayor Joe Hordyski says, while there are a lot of factors to consider, the overall concept seems to make sense.

According to Indian Affairs, there are currently six First Nations in Saskatchewan that share a water system with a nearby municipality.
