An outside policy agency has been called in to help investigate the RCMP shooting of a First Nations man on a southern Saskatchewan reserve.
The shooting took place Monday on the Muskowekwan First Nation near Punnichy following a lengthy standoff between the victim and an RCMP Emergency Response Team.
The Mounties were called to the scene at about 6:30 that morning after a woman made a 9-1-1 call concerning a man with a rifle in her house.
44-year-old Delbert Kenneth Pelletier held the RCMP at bay until approximately 2:00 pm, when he emerged from the house and exchanged gunfire with the Mounties.
Pelletier was killed in the exchange. None of the officers present were injured.
Because his death involved the police, a Regina police officer has been called in to observe the investigation, according to standard procedure.
