The life of the Metis Nation’s most famous leader is being celebrated today on the anniversary of his execution.
Louis Riel died more than a century ago after leading his people in a historic battle for independence.
Festivities are planned throughout Saskatchewan, including celebrations at the Batoche Historic Site and the Central Urban Metis Federation in Saskatoon.
Several Metis artists will also be performing at a Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company function in Saskatoon.
SNTC general manager Donna Heimbecker says the event is designed to pay homage to Metis leaders, both past and present.
