Ile-a-la-Crosse Survivors Sue Governments

A Regina-based lawyer says an amended class-action lawsuit has been laid against the two levels of Government on behalf of boarding school survivors in Ile a’la Crosse.

It essentially calls on the government to compensate the former students on the same level as that of residential school survivors.

The key difference in this particular document though is that both the Federal and Provincial Governments are named.

Lawyer Tony Merchant says the reason for this is because Ottawa keeps passing the buck whenever arguments are laid over who was in charge of the school.

Merchant says he thinks the case can be resolved in as little as two years time but he expects the government to try delaying it.

It was filed yesterday at Regina Court of Queen’s Bench.
